  • The True Origin of Character

  • I have often passed school marquees that show what character trait teachers and students are working on at a given time. It is good for children to be honest, to be responsible, to have integrity, but I know that they need Jesus to have the power to follow through on those wonderful traits that were God’s idea long before they were the ideas of man. When children learn history from a Christian perspective, they learn other concepts that belonged first to God—concepts like freedom, justice, fairness, and peace. God doesn’t just tell people to give other people freedom, to act with justice, to be fair, and to foster peace. He gives us freedom in Christ. He teaches us what justice is. He trains us to be fair and to live at peace. He gives us the power to act in those ways.

Colossians 2 teaches that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Christ Himself. It also tells us why God wants us to know where the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. In Colossians 2, verses 4 and 8, the apostle Paul wrote:

I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument. See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.
