When we were homeschooling, our family enjoyed black-and-white movies from the 1940s. One favorite was Mrs. Miniver, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1942. The movie is based on the book Mrs. Miniver by Jan Struther. On page 120 of the 1940 edition, the author comments, "She wondered why it had never occurred to her before that you cannot successfully navigate the future unless you keep always framed beside it a small clear image of the past."

One day while my husband, Ray and I, were on a walk, we saw spiderwebs in a wire fence. I noticed that some of the spiders had built their webs to conform to the inside of the square. You might say that the square was its frame of reference. When you homeschool, you have a wealth of opportunities to provide a frame of reference for your children. A frame of reference is another way to express the idea of a worldview. Every day we must stop and make sure we are training their worldview to be centered on Christ and not on the world.

Every person who has ever lived has been tempted to sin. Only Jesus always said no to those temptations. Please protect your children from the pull of the world. Please don’t let anyone entice you to secularize their education.

Romans 12:2 says:

. . . do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

In some ways, I think of that spider’s web in its square and feel sorry for the people who don’t know how to get out of their squares and grow beyond them. On the other hand, I feel sorry for the people who have no boundaries and don’t know where to anchor their lives.

We all need to pray for wisdom so that we stay within the safe boundaries God has provided for our good while experiencing the growth He offers to us in Jesus. We want for our children what the apostle Paul wanted for the Christians in Colossae. When you read the following verses from Colossians, try inserting your child’s name every time Paul uses the word “every man.” Now, there’s a good goal for your homeschooling.

We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me. Colossians 1:28-29

What a divided world we live in today. Curriculum written from a Christian worldview teaches children to have a Christ-like heart for the world.
